Midsummer
in SwedenWhere to spend it, and what to book

Where to spend it, what really happens on the day, what closes and what to book, with the 2027 dates and the programmes as they stand.

Midsummer Eve is not a public holiday in Swedish law. It is simply the day most of the country takes off anyway.

The short answer

Lake Siljan,
Thursday to Sunday,
25 June 2027

Midsummer Eve 2027 is Friday 25 June. For a first one, go to Lake Siljan in Dalarna, arrive on Thursday and stay until Sunday. Leksand has the best-known celebration, with church boats on the river and around 30,000 people in town; Rättvik, Tällberg and Nusnäs are smaller and, for most visitors, better. Book the room and the Midsummer meal together, and stay where you celebrate, because getting home after the dancing is harder than getting there. If you only have Stockholm, spend the Eve at Skansen or take a booked boat out to Grinda or Vaxholm. Either way the sun will set, at 22:08 in Stockholm: only the far north has the midnight sun.

On Midsummer Eve 2027 the sun sets at 21:55 in Malmö, 22:08 in Stockholm and 22:42 at Mora, on Lake Siljan.

From Stockholm northwards the sky never gets properly dark before it rises again. Swedes call these bright nights: ljusa nätter.

At Luleå the sun sets two minutes after midnight and rises again a little over an hour later.

Only in the far north, at Kiruna and Abisko, does it stay up all night. The solstice itself is four days earlier, on 21 June.

When it is, and what kind of holiday

Midsummer Day, midsommardagen, is fixed by law as the Saturday between 20 and 26 June. Midsummer Eve, midsommarafton, is the Friday before it, and it is the Eve that Sweden celebrates. In 2027 that is Friday 25 June, with Midsummer Day on Saturday 26 June. It is not the solstice, which falls on 21 June 2027 at 16:11 Swedish time, and it moves every year.

The Eve is not a public holiday in law. Midsummer Day is the red day, röd dag; the Eve is a day off by custom and by most employment agreements, which is why it feels like the bigger holiday. Neither means that everything shuts: some museums close and others stay open. In a 2026 survey for Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer, 88 per cent of Swedes said they usually celebrate.

What happens on the day

At the centre is the pole: midsommarstång, or majstång, from the old verb maja, to dress with leaves. A tall cross with two hoops is wrapped in greenery and flowers, carried in procession, raised by hand and danced around. The dances are ring games for every age: Små grodorna, the little frogs, Vi äro musikanter and Karusellen. People pick flowers and make wreaths to wear, and folklore says that a young woman who sleeps with seven flowers under her pillow, picked in silence, will dream of the man she will marry.

Then comes the meal, usually at home or among friends: pickled herring, new potatoes with dill, soured cream and chives, strawberries, and a small glass of snaps with a song before it. Most Swedes celebrate privately, at a summer house or in a garden. The public celebrations are held in parks, meadows and the grounds of old farmsteads, and anyone may join them.

There is no national timetable. In 2026 Löberöd in Skåne was dancing by 11:00, Jamtli in Östersund raised its pole at 14:00, Nusnäs on Lake Siljan at about 16:00, and Grinda in the archipelago raised its pole the evening before, on Thursday. Check the programme of the place you choose.

Dalarna and Lake Siljan

Dalarna is where Sweden goes to see Midsummer kept the old way, and Leksand's celebration is the best known. Church boats carrying choirs and fiddlers come down the Österdalälven, a procession walks to the arena at Gropen, and a pole that Visit Dalarna puts at 26 metres and close to 800 kilograms is raised by hand. Leksand Municipality estimates that around 30,000 people come into the centre. Tourism bodies call it the largest celebration in Sweden, though nobody publishes comparable figures to prove it. Its 2027 programme is not yet out, and the traditional celebration at Gropen is not the same thing as the separate, ticketed music festival in town.

Around the rest of the lake the celebrations are smaller, and for most visitors better. Rättvik's begins with a procession from the Enå bridge to Rättviks gammelgård, the old farmstead. In Nusnäs, where Dala horses are carved, the 2026 programme started with garland-making on Thursday evening and raised the pole at about four on Friday afternoon, with no entry charge. Tällberg's village celebration is in the evening.

Midsummer does not stop on the Eve. Våmhus, near Mora, celebrates on Midsummer Day, and the village of Stumsnäs rows its church boat to the Midsummer Day service in Rättvik church. The church-boat races, Siljansrodden, are a series rather than a single event: in 2026 they ran from Siljansnäs on 20 June to Leksand on 4 July.

Staying around the lake, and getting there

Stay where you celebrate. Trains link Leksand, Rättvik and Mora, but late connections on a holiday evening are thin, and you will want to stay for the dancing. Book the room and the Midsummer meal together. Two places have already published their 2027 Midsummer: Stiftsgården in Rättvik, from 25 to 27 June, at SEK 3,710 a person in a double room with meals, in an alcohol-free house; and Åkerblads in Tällberg, three nights from 24 June with half-board from SEK 7,145 a person, its own pole raised at about three on the Eve and a Midsummer lunch at SEK 625 that it advises booking with the room.

Leksand is about 260 kilometres from Stockholm: a little over three hours by car, and roughly three by train. Mora is a little under four hours by train, or 45 minutes on Jonair's flight from Arlanda. Travel on Wednesday if you can. In 2026 Trafikverket expected the heaviest traffic out of Stockholm on Thursday until about 19:00 and on Friday until about 14:00, including on the roads towards Dalarna. SJ releases its tickets in batches through the year, so book the train the day the June dates open.

Stockholm and Skansen

In Stockholm the best-known traditional celebration is at Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården, among its historic buildings. On Midsummer Eve 2027 it is open from 10:00 to 22:00; the programme will follow. Tickets are cheaper online, and children up to 15 go free but need a ticket of their own.

The city does not shut. Nordiska museet opens every day of the year, from 10:00 to 17:00 in summer, and in 2026 Moderna Museet closed on the Eve and opened on Midsummer Day. Systembolaget does close, on both days, and the Thursday before is when everyone shops: in 2025 it served 1,095,713 customers that Thursday, against 426,817 on an ordinary one. Buy what you need by Wednesday.

One warning about older advice. Hasselbacken, on Djurgården, is still recommended for its Midsummer, but its own website says it is closed for renovation. Check before you plan around it.

The archipelago

The other Stockholm Midsummer is on the islands. On Grinda in 2026 the pole went up at 19:30 on Thursday, wreath-making ran from 09:00 to 11:00 on Friday, and the dancing began at 13:30 on the meadow by the inn, where a three-course Midsummer meal cost SEK 995. Vaxholm's celebration in Lägerparken was free, with the pole raised and the dancing at 16:00. On Sandhamn there was a Midsummer lunch from 11:00 at SEK 565, and dancing on Adolfs torg at 15:00. None of the islands had published 2027 programmes when we wrote this.

The boat is the part to book. Strömma's Cinderella boats have their own timetable for 25 June 2027, and every place on them can be sold online: if a sailing sells out, you cannot buy a ticket on board. Strömma also sells a 2027 Midsummer cruise to Grinda, six hours from Nybrokajen with a three-course meal, from SEK 1,425. Waxholmsbolaget's public boats cannot be booked at all, and Midsummer is among their busiest days. Our Stockholm archipelago guide has the islands and the boats in full.

The west coast, Skåne and Gotland

In Göteborg the city's own celebration is in Slottsskogen park, on the meadow at Björngårdsängen, from 15:00 to 18:00 in 2026. Out in the northern archipelago, the islands of Öckerö, Fotö, Rörö and Björkö each hold their own. In Skåne, Visit Skåne points to Sofiero and Fredriksdal in Helsingborg, Kulturen in Lund and Hovdala, near Hässleholm.

In Österlen, Ales stenar is open at all hours. On Midsummer Eve 2027 the sun sets there at about 21:50, close to the line of the stone ship's north-western end. That is a calculation, not proof that its builders meant it, and it is no secret, so do not expect the headland to yourself.

On Gotland, Visby celebrates on Paviljongsplan: in 2026 the procession left Södertorg at 12:30 and the pole went up at 13:00. The 2027 listing gives the date but still shows the 2026 times. At Vidhave, a farm in the countryside, the 2026 celebration came with a buffet at SEK 349. The ferries run from Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn in about three hours; book the crossing with the room.

The north, and the midnight sun

Midsummer and the midnight sun only meet in the far north. At Luleå, on the coast, the sun sets two minutes after midnight on Midsummer Eve 2027 and rises again a little over an hour later. At Kiruna it does not set at all. Our midnight sun guide has the dates place by place, and Three Midnights is the trip we plan around them in Abisko.

Up here the holiday itself is quieter, and public celebrations are smaller and harder to find in advance, so go for the light rather than the maypole. The mountain huts generally open around Midsummer, a little later in Jämtland, and the mosquitoes are arriving. Late June is also when Sámi herders begin gathering reindeer for calf marking, which is work, not a show. Further south, in Jämtland, Jamtli, the open-air museum in Östersund, raised its pole at 14:00 in 2026, with adult entry at SEK 160.

Two small glasses of clear schnapps raised in a toast over plates of food at a Swedish table

The table, the snaps and the songs

The Midsummer table is younger than it looks. Pickled herring was being made industrially by the 1800s, while new potatoes became part of the meal after the Second World War and strawberries in the middle of the 20th century, according to Nordiska museet. Today's table is several kinds of herring, new potatoes with dill, soured cream and chives, often salmon, and strawberries or a strawberry cake to finish. Whether those strawberries are Swedish depends on the spring: in 2026 a cold one delayed the harvest.

Then the snaps: a small glass of spiced spirits, raised to a short drinking song, a snapsvisa. The tradition took shape in the second half of the 1800s, and Helan går is the one everyone knows. In Midsummer week 2025 Systembolaget sold just over 16 million litres of drink, half as much again as in an ordinary week.

If you are not invited into a Swedish home, book the meal: the island inns, the Sandhamn lunch and Åkerblads' lunch in Tällberg are all above. Our snaps blending afternoon is a good way to arrive with a bottle of your own.

Staying safe

Fire bans are common in a dry June. They come from the county or the municipality, so check on the day before lighting a barbecue. The drink-driving limit is 0.2 per mille, and it applies on the water too, for any boat that can do 15 knots or is 10 metres long or more. Swim sober, and with someone.

Ticks carrying tick-borne encephalitis are a real risk in the Stockholm archipelago and on the Bohuslän coast, and a very low one around Lake Siljan. 1177, the national health service, advises vaccination for time outdoors in risk areas, and the second dose comes one to three months after the first, so start well before June.

Worth knowing

Six things other guides get wrong

  1. “Midsummer is always on 21 June.”It moves. Midsummer Eve is the Friday between 19 and 25 June: 25 June in 2027. The solstice that year is the 21st.
  2. “Midsummer Eve is a public holiday.”Not in law. Midsummer Day, the Saturday, is the red day; the Eve is a day off by custom and by agreement.
  3. “The sun doesn't set at Midsummer.”Only in the far north. In Stockholm it sets at 22:08 on Midsummer Eve 2027, and the night stays light.
  4. “It is an ancient pagan festival.”The pole came from German-speaking Europe in the 1400s or 1500s, and much of today's celebration is from the 1800s and 1900s. Nobody knows if it was kept before Christianity.
  5. “The pole is a phallic symbol.”A popular story. Nordiska museet says there is no evidence for it.
  6. “Everything in Sweden closes.”Skansen is open until 22:00 and Nordiska museet opens every day of the year. Systembolaget is the one that really closes.

What to bring

  • A rain jacket: in June it rains on about ten days at Mora
  • A warm layer for the long, cool evening
  • Shoes for grass and gravel: celebrations are in meadows
  • Repellent, and a look for ticks each evening
  • An eye mask for the bright nights
  • A card or phone to pay: cash is rarely needed
  • Confirmations for the room, the meal and the boat
  • Anything from Systembolaget, bought by Wednesday

Questions

When is Midsummer in Sweden in 2027?

Midsummer Eve, the day Sweden celebrates, is Friday 25 June 2027, and Midsummer Day is Saturday 26 June. The law fixes Midsummer Day as the Saturday between 20 and 26 June, so the date changes every year.

Where is the best place to celebrate Midsummer as a visitor?

Lake Siljan in Dalarna, for the traditional version: Leksand for the largest celebration, or the smaller ones at Rättvik, Tällberg and Nusnäs. From Stockholm, Skansen or the archipelago islands of Grinda, Vaxholm and Sandhamn.

Can tourists join a Midsummer celebration?

Yes. The public celebrations in parks, meadows and old farmsteads are open to anyone, and many are free: Vaxholm's and Nusnäs's were in 2026. Skansen and some museums charge their normal admission.

Is everything closed on Midsummer Eve?

No. Skansen is open from 10:00 to 22:00 on Midsummer Eve 2027 and Nordiska museet opens every day of the year. Some museums and many shops close or shorten their hours, so check each one.

Is Systembolaget open at Midsummer?

No. It closed on both Midsummer Eve and Midsummer Day in 2026, and the Thursday before is one of its busiest days. Buy what you need earlier in the week.

Does the sun set at Midsummer in Sweden?

In most of the country, yes: at 22:08 in Stockholm and 22:42 at Mora on Midsummer Eve 2027, with a bright night in between. Only in the far north, at Kiruna and Abisko, does the sun stay up all night. Our midnight sun guide has the dates.

What should I book in advance?

The room, the Midsummer meal and any Cinderella boat, which can sell out online and then cannot be bought on board, plus the train as soon as SJ opens the dates. Waxholmsbolaget's public boats cannot be booked.

How do I get from Stockholm to Leksand?

About 260 kilometres: a little over three hours by car, or roughly three by train. Jonair also flies from Arlanda to Mora in 45 minutes. Avoid driving out of Stockholm on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.

What do Swedes eat at Midsummer?

Pickled herring, new potatoes with dill, soured cream and chives, often salmon, and strawberries to finish, with beer and a small glass of snaps raised to a song.

Is Midsummer like the film Midsommar?

No. The flowers, the long table and the dancing are real; the horror is invented. Dagens Nyheter's review called the film a fantasy version of Sweden.

Midsommar: Swedish for Midsummer. The celebration itself is on midsommarafton, Midsummer Eve.
