About Österlen
Skåne's east coast — chalk-white cliffs, apple orchards, artists' studios and long farm tables. The closest thing Sweden has to a countryside food and art scene, and one of the few places on this map worth visiting slowly, by car, with no fixed plan.
Getting there
Fly to Copenhagen and cross the Öresund bridge — around ninety minutes to the coast. Malmö is closer still. This is the most easily reached place on this map from the rest of Europe.
What to see and do in Österlen
Eat where the food is grown
Österlen's restaurants are largely on the farms that supply them. The distance between field and table here is measured in metres, without anyone making a slogan of it.
The studios
Artists and ceramicists have been moving here for generations, and many keep open workshops. It is a genuine working community rather than a gallery trail.
Ales stenar at dusk
A stone ship of fifty-nine boulders on a headland above the sea, roughly fourteen centuries old, and no one is entirely sure why it is there.

How do we get around Österlen?
By car, and we would not recommend anything else. The whole appeal of this corner of Skåne is the distance between things — an orchard, a studio, a headland, a farm restaurant, none of them more than twenty minutes apart and none of them well served by public transport. It is the one destination on this map where the driving genuinely is the holiday.
Is it worth combining with Copenhagen?
Very much so, and more people should. Copenhagen airport is around ninety minutes away across the Öresund bridge, which makes a few days of Danish city followed by a week of Swedish countryside an unusually easy pairing. It is also the simplest way into Sweden from most of Europe, if you would rather not connect through Stockholm.
When is the best time to visit Österlen?
It depends what you are coming for, and the answer is rarely July. May is the orchards in blossom and the prettiest fortnight of the year. High summer is warm and busy, and the beaches are genuinely good. But September and October are the ones we would push: harvest, game, apples, the studios still open, the light gone gold, and the tables bookable. For a food-led trip, autumn beats summer here.
