About Visby
A walled medieval town on Gotland, its ring of ramparts almost entirely intact after seven hundred years. Cobbled lanes, rose-covered ruins, and a summer pace that has more in common with the Mediterranean than the Swedish mainland.
Getting there
Fly from Stockholm in around thirty-five minutes, or take the ferry from Nynäshamn in about three hours. The ferry is the better arrival if you want a car on the island.
What to see and do in Visby
Walk the wall
Three and a half kilometres of medieval rampart, still standing, still ringing the town. A UNESCO World Heritage site you can simply walk around in an evening.
Get out of the town
Gotland beyond Visby is the surprise — limestone sea stacks, empty beaches, sheep, and some of the best small restaurants in Sweden hidden in villages.
Medieval Week, or deliberately not
In August the whole town commits to it entirely. You will either want to be here precisely then or precisely not, and we would rather ask than guess.

Is Visby worth more than a day trip?
The town itself can be walked in a day, and most visitors do exactly that — which is why most visitors miss the point. Gotland is a large island with sea stacks, empty beaches, limestone farmland, and a genuinely serious food scene scattered through villages nobody stops in. We would give it three or four nights and a car, with Visby as the beginning rather than the whole trip.
What is Medieval Week?
A week-long festival in early August during which Visby commits fully to its own history — costume, markets, jousting, the lot. It is enormous fun and it fills the island completely. It is also emphatically not a quiet romantic week inside the walls, so it is worth deciding early whether you are travelling for it or around it.
Should we fly or take the ferry to Gotland?
Fly if it is a short stay and you will base yourself inside the walls: it is around thirty-five minutes from Stockholm, and Visby is walkable once you land. Take the ferry from Nynäshamn, roughly three hours, if you want a car — and you will want one if you plan to see anything beyond the town. Given how much of Gotland's best food and coastline sits outside Visby, we suggest the ferry more often than not.
