Ceramics Studio

Industrial before artisanal

Sweden's ceramic tradition is industrial before it is artisanal — Gustavsberg and Höganäs made tableware for the whole country, and the designers who worked for them in the middle of the last century are the reason Swedish ceramics are collected at all.

What exists now is the tail of that: small studios, often run by people trained in those factories or in the schools that fed them, making small runs by hand in old buildings.

A day at a wheel is a day of failure with one or two exceptions, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not sat at one. Centring the clay is the whole difficulty and it is a physical skill, not a delicate one.
