Made things, not decoration

Duodji is the Sámi word for made things, and it is not a decorative tradition — it is the set of objects a herding life actually requires. A knife, a cup, a strap, a bag, a coil of root-work that holds something. Everything has a job and the beauty is a consequence of doing that job well for a long time.

The materials come from the same system: reindeer antler and hide, birch burl, pewter thread, spruce and birch root soaked and split.

A morning with a maker is a morning of one small thing done properly rather than a sampler of five. Usually root-work or a pewter-thread braid on a leather band — slow, absorbing, and much harder than it looks for the first hour.

The mark worth looking for

There is a real distinction worth knowing before you shop. Genuine duodji made by Sámi makers carries a mark, Sámi Duodji, and a great deal of what is sold to visitors in the north is neither Sámi-made nor made here at all.

Buying from the maker solves this entirely, and it is one of the few places where the object costs what it costs because of the hours in it.

Year round, and better in winter when there is less other work. Expect a half day, expect to take home something imperfect that you made, and expect it to be the thing you show people.
