Kivik Apple Harvest

The orchard before the market

Kivik sits on the eastern side of Skåne, in Österlen, where orchards run down towards the Baltic. September and October are not a decorative apple season here. This is skördetid — the working harvest — and the fruit has to be picked, sorted and pressed while it is ready.

You begin in an orchard with a grower, learning why one row is for eating apples, another is for juice, and why the flavour changes from one week to the next. If the harvest allows, you pick a few yourself. This is not an all-you-can-carry visit; it is time inside a real working day.

Cold weather helps. A bright October morning, damp grass and wooden crates filling beside the trees feel more like Kivik than a polished tasting room ever could.

Äppelmust from the press

Swedish apple juice is usually called äppelmust. It is pressed rather than made from concentrate, and the taste changes with the apple. Some varieties are sharp and almost dry; others are round and sweet without needing added sugar.

At a small press or gårdsbutik — a farm shop — you taste several varieties side by side. Where available, the tasting can continue with local cider or apple spirits. The useful part is having someone explain which orchard the fruit came from and what changed in that week's harvest.

Lunch should stay simple: good bread, local cheese, something warm made with apples and a glass poured from the fruit you have just seen outside.

When Kivik becomes apple country

Around Äppelmarknaden, Kivik and the villages of Österlen fill with harvest stalls, tastings and apple displays. The best-known piece is the äppeltavla, a large picture made from real apples. It changes each year and belongs to the harvest rather than to a permanent exhibition.

The exact programme changes with the calendar, so the journey should be built around confirmed opening days rather than a promised market event. Outside the busiest weekend, the orchards are calmer and the tastings are often more personal.

Late September into October is the window. Go for the harvest first and the festival second; that way the day still works if the weather changes.
