Frozen Archipelago Walk
Walking on water you sailed
Walking out onto frozen sea is the strangest thing on this list and it takes about ten minutes to stop feeling strange. Under you is water you sailed over in summer. Around you the islands look wrong, because their jetties and boathouses are now at the level of the ground you are standing on.
In a good winter the ice in the northern Gulf of Bothnia gets thick enough to carry vehicles, and locally it is treated as ordinary infrastructure rather than as an adventure — marked routes, monitored thickness, closed when conditions change.
You walk it with a guide, on a route that was checked that day, carrying claws and a line. The formality of that is not theatre. It is the reason it is a walk rather than a risk.
