One concert is enough

Stockholm Jazz Festival spreads across the city for ten days in October, from concert halls to hotel bars and small rooms where the audience sits a few metres from the band. The programme is large enough to make people choose badly. One strong booking is better than racing between three.

We choose the concert first, then build the evening around it. That might mean a recognised name at Konserthuset, a new Swedish group at Fasching or something quieter in a room you would not notice from the street.

Book early for the smallest venues. They are the part of the festival that sells out first and the part people tend to remember.

Dinner should be close

October evenings in Stockholm are already dark and often wet. Crossing the city between dinner and the music sounds simple until the tram is late and the doors are closing.

Choose a restaurant within walking distance of the venue and leave enough time for a drink without watching the clock. If the concert is at Fasching, the streets around Centralstation give you plenty of choices; elsewhere, let the neighbourhood decide the meal.

The useful Swedish phrase is jazzkväll — a jazz evening. It suggests the whole night rather than only the ticket.

Stay for the smaller room

The first concert can be polished and planned. The second should be smaller: a late set, a bar stage or a room where the musicians speak to the audience between songs.

That contrast is what makes the night feel like Stockholm rather than a festival schedule copied onto a city. Large stages show the programme; small rooms show the local scene.

The festival takes place in October. Jazz continues year round at venues including Fasching, Stampen and Glenn Miller Café, so the same kind of evening can be arranged outside the festival dates.
