Forest Bathing

The name puts people off

The name is a translation from the Japanese and it puts some people off, which is a shame, because what it describes is unremarkable and works. You walk slowly in a forest for two or three hours, with somebody whose job is to slow you down further, and you do not go anywhere in particular.

That is the whole of it. No target, no summit, no distance. The guide will stop you and ask you to do things that feel mildly absurd for the first twenty minutes — stand still, listen for the furthest sound, put your hands on something — and then stop feeling absurd.

Sweden is well suited to it for a boring reason: there is a great deal of forest, the right of public access means you can be in it, and almost nobody else is.
